Jurate Phillips | Website: www.gourmetartstudio.com
Jurate Phillips grew up in Lithuania. Graduating from Siauliu Universitetas, in Lithuania, where she was classically trained in painting and design. She came to the United States in 1997 where she has since graduated from CCAD (2002). She now resides in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and daughter.
Since her earliest days her passion has been for art in all forms. Jurate has partaken in the creation of many pieces from photography, to painting and sculpture. After working as an interior designer, freelance artist and teaching art she has returned to her first love -painting. She now focuses on painting regularly and exhibiting her work. Her emotions dictate to her what she will paint. One day she will do a landscape, another an abstract, or she might be inspired by a simple flowers bloom. Her deepest wish is that others will see her work and be inspired by it.

I am creating figurative work based off of the circuit boards found within old televisions and radios. These still life paintings are tangible metaphors for my past and present and strongly influence my decision in representing life contained within the complex mechanisms. There are tiny worlds locked away within the plastic or wooden casings, unnoticed and virtually untouched by man.

I think that people misperceive nature, specifically plants. Culturally they tend to be viewed as passive entities that simply exist. However, the more you learn about plants, the more you come to understand how aggressive they truly are. Given enough time, plants will shape the world to suit themselves. My medium of choice is photography. In the most graphic but realistic way possible, my work uses strong emphasis on color and design to broadcast the view of plants as an aggressive force.

Channeling multiple perspectives, I try to combine cliche and esoteric, representational and abstract, form and void, solid and ephermal, artificial versus natural to define my own artistic style. As varied as the global community has become, I feel compelled to use every media available to us and thus consider myself a multimedia artist instead of beholden to any one form. Art should be able to communicate to people and draw them in to deeper conversations.
Plus, robots are freaking awesome.

SACRED BRACELETS - Intuitive jewelry designer Jenny Sieck is passionate about designing wearable art that speaks to your soul. She uses intuitive impressions to determine what speaks to your Soul. These bracelet’s enchanting coils are created by wrapping semi-precious stones, recycled findings, silver, brass, copper and/or spectrumed rainbow colored wirework. Some are done to hold the energy of a sacred place youv'e been too. The most complex of these are like painting with wire and beads. She uses patience, observation,& meditation to sinc with the picture. After sitting with the picture I feel like I have been to these places & returned. The bracelets depict a sacred place-called Sacred sites Jewelry,or a dream scene, animal totems, chakra colors or all of these. They act as a spiritual tool to inspire your sacred work. My images reveal the true nature of flowers. They are not nearly as smooth and uniform as they appear. There are crags and valleys in them, changes of texture and color. Our eyes are just not good enough to see it. Within every flower lurks a demonic spirit -- not demonic in the sense of having a purpose to do harm, but demonic in the sense of being wild and free with its own reasons for being here. It will follow those reasons to the exclusion of all others.

I like the feel of these mediums: Acrylic paint, glazes, and charcoal. Pallet knives, rags, and sponges replace brushes. Larger canvases allow for more shape and overall design with less detail. I paint to capture the simplicity of an object. I keep to Al Hirshfield’s goal of being able to capture a likeness in a single line. Trained as a caricaturist, I paint quickly, capturing the image as it first strikes me. Unlike caricatures, I revisit the painting numerous times over a period of days, adding layers or changing it completely. Each painting has a story. If not, it would not be art, but just a graphic in a clipart collection.

C Mehrl Bennett’s background is in the fine arts; B.A. in painting, drawing, music; includes many years as a mail artist; and an exhibit history from the 80’s and early 90’s that focused on sculptural junk assemblage. In an effort to revisit two dimensional art, she has found her creative spirit with digital software tools, combining her artistry with a longtime interest in visual poetry. In the spirit of mail-art, collaborating with other poets or artists is common fodder. C’s word art has been published in Lost & Found Times, Vispoeology (Minneapolis Center for Book Arts), Otoliths, and in numerous websites online. In 2008, Luna Bisonte Prods published her digital art/visual poetry book and a book featuring collaborations in kimono form with information about each collaborator. In making work, I am particularly interested in two ideas: female sexuality and the relationship between viewer, artwork, and space.
First, I have (quite recently) decided to abandon my typical self-portraiture. Although I will continue to use my own image when necessary, I am moving away from purely referencing my own private experiences in order to explore the experiences of other women. I am very interested in the work of Eve Ensler and Nancy Friday- asking and interviewing real women to share their personal stories of love, sexuality, and self-definition.
Second, issues of space and installation have become more and more critical with my work. If you design architecture in a certain way, it has an explicit effect on the people within it. Like an architect, I purposely design the space to produce a specific effect on the viewer. I feel that sounds, smells, and movement within the gallery are just as important as lighting and the work itself, so I take all the senses into consideration when designing the exhibition. I do this because I am interested in the psychological relationship and the physiological effect between the work and the viewer ; how merely being within a space and in front of a series of work can create certain feelings that are commonly shared by anyone who experiences the space.

Much of my work has been a search. Not in the sense that something is “missing” but meaning that something awaits discovery. That is why I constantly write, searching not only the line itself, the letter it forms, or the word the letter is contained within, but something more. People have forgotten how to handwrite, how to have patience to discover the line’s flourishes and folds, the space between the folds, the life, in favor of the mass produced, the computer, the dead. The need to remember or more exactly the need to not forget is why I collect seemingly worthless objects. I search for and collect things both consciously and unconsciously, such as an ornate tea cup, a photograph found by the side of the road, a child’s toy, my own journal pages. These items reveal the scraps of life, life’s leftovers, the ephemeral remnants of existence.

I work in latex, acrylic, spray-paint, and fire. This process is derived from a ceramics firing process called pit-firing. I developed this technique several years ago after finishing up at CCAD where I spent every waking minute in the ceramics area. Having zero cash and even less desire to lug unfired clay all over town, I started working in this new medium and found something that I enjoyed just as much as working in clay. I call them Pit-Fired Paintings, hope you like 'em. jallengray@gmail.com
