Kristina Valunta-Young

Over the centuries, Hill of Crosses has come to signify a peaceful endurance of Lithuanian Catholicism despite threats it faced throughout the history. After the third partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, Lithuania became part of the Russian Empire. Both Poles and Lithuanians unsuccessfully rebelled against Russian authorities in 1831 and 1863. These two uprisings are connected with the beginnings of the hill: as families could not locate bodies of perished rebels, they started putting up symbolic crosses in place of a former hill fort. On February 16, 1918 Lithuania declared its independence. During 1944-1990, when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, Lithuanians continued to travel to the Hill and leave their tributes to demonstrate their allegiance to their original identity, religion and heritage. Unsuccessfully, Soviets tried hard to destroy the Hill and bulldozed the site at least three times. Today, the crosses continue to find their home on the Hill, symbolizing not only prayers for personal health, happiness, prosperity but freedom of those regions of the world that continue to fight for their freedom.

I am a painter who is driven by inspiration; whatever comes to me or crosses my path in my daily life finds its way to the waiting canvas. To satisfy my creative needs, I paint in several different styles. These range from abstract to landscapes, still life... I often paint while listening to music and enjoying a cup of gourmet coffee.

In my artwork, I strive to allow the viewer, not what I personally am trying to convey, to come to terms with what idea they think is conveyed. Art is a very personal process with creator and viewer alike. To insist on a said view point creates an imaginary wall between the conversation of ideas and the people we as artist are trying to reach.

Using spray paint, acrylic, and marker, my work tends to have a childlike, naïve quality to it. Yet the images are rich with symbolism and subversion. Many of the pieces are symmetrical, which contrasts nicely and gives order to the more whimsical elements. Themes that are often explored in my work are animals, tragic humor, and personal memories. For influences, I find myself drawn to folk art, works made by other cultures, cartoons, and religious iconography.

Its like the epiphany that the thing that you aspire to do most in the world is to be one of the resident prostitutes on HBO's "Cathouse."--- totally straight rocking the gelled perm-smelling like coconut, playing scrabble with the other hoes and even winning(sometimes), majorly jammin' out to candlebox on your discman, ..........but then suddenly the terrifying realization hits that your legs were amputated last night while you were passed out at a rave........ but its totally cool 'cause then your pager goes off and you get the call that says "Cathouse" wants to hire you anyway!!!!!!!!.........so then in celebration you light up a Virginia Slim and order your tickets to Nevada on Priceline and start to brainstorm how you can smuggle meth on the airline inside your stumps. Half way through boarding you are approached by airport officials who promptly arrest you and throw you in an a womens prison where you align with a lesbian gang called the Lesbeatins and they teach you how to crochet, lift weights, and play dodgeball- and most importantly how to cook vienna sausages right(in a stew made with spit and dandelions from the yard). You gotta scrap off the gelatin and mix it with the spit says Brenda........ and what Brenda says goes.

I start with a single thought and tend to think abstractly on a broad scale, emptying my mind like a vessel. In a sense this meditational approach allows a naturally chaotic, unforced approach to thinking - with logic and reasoning absent. At least at first. I usually take general, holistic thoughts and try to untangle the internal structure of it's interrelated threads. To relate and compare them, to see the functioning "big picture". But sometimes the idea is just there, in an object, picture or experience that attracts my attention. They serve as the essence of a realm of common experiences. So I try to express them the best I can, in terms of how simple and well they can be communicated to the viewer visually, both logically and emotionally.

Ben New | Website: ccad.digication.com/bnew

My current work is something like sans-reference realism in the sense that there is nothing inherently abstract about paint on a surface. The paintings are formal objects designed to bring a viewers perceptions about the piece to the surface for examination. They are also acceptable as purely ornamental objects. The symbolic ambiguity of the piece lets the viewer interact with the work as a vessel for whatever one will place inside its parameter. This sets the table for intimate dialogue between the viewer and the viewer's perceptions of the work as a reflection of the viewer and their personal lens. The painting is a program run and resolved by the painter through the process of its creation and is now a multi-platform set of instructions and data to be run by the viewer who gives the work life by observing the formal object.

Lauren N Rogers

My art work is done on found materials such as slate, windows, doors, found wood, and tile. The pieces I have listed below are on black slate, porcelain tile, and found wood. They are a release of raw emotions and dealings of rough relationships. The colors used are generaly bright to overcome the dark feelings in the paintings.
click thumbnails to see larger image...

Rachel Murdock

I work with mixed media (acrylic, oil pastels, varnishes, transfers) to create compositions that are more centered around color study than subject matter. I tend to focus on the process rather than a concept and continuously add and take away from each piece. The result is a work of layers, textures, and a whole lot of personality.

My current focus within my art has been uncovering images and processes that are simultaneously present and illusive. Many aspects of my work are about uncovering hidden truths both within me and in the very nature of perception itself. Through the combination of color, form and process I present the structure and resulting chaos that is integrated into the pursuit for truth.

The figure is a representation of the minds narrative displayed through the human form; it is ever changing and hardly predictable, and because of this the figure has played the leading role in my photographic work from the first shot to the latest. My personal goal is to explore this mental to physical narrative through the form of the figure, the emotion of the figure, the expression of the figure, and the color I feel displays and sets the mood the figure’s narrative requires. I strive for an esoteric quality to my work, questions come up, but there is no clear answer. This leaves the viewer engaged; they are putting in there own story based upon there experiences and there personal narrative; now my work has more or new meaning to the viewer, now the photograph is both mine and there’s.

"Alteraciones Cotidianas" is a photo series which was produced in the capitol of Guatemala, Central America. It was part of a group exposition in the "Ex-centrico", a modern art gallery in downtown. This project dealt with urban daily life which can be re-interpreted and altered in different ways. I focused on urban ancient tiles in old buildings like schools or cathedrals which are normally being ignored. Taking these tiles with matching elements like piles or chair legs and flipping them upside down converts into what I call "domestic flowers".

Bethany Jozwiak-Butler

Archetypes, shadows and personal symbols. I create to express beauty and to seek truth. I study, observe and celebrate. Through the act of looking closely does the vision become reality. I can choose to create chaos or order. I use subject and color to make an impact and take the viewer on a journey. Layers and texture are used to further explore the world, to draw the viewer deeper into the dream, into themselves. In life there is often more than meets the eye. My work is not quiet, it does not tip toe. I am passionate about the process of creation. I love the fire that allows the metal to be molded as much as I love the finished piece. I want the viewer to feel a passionate emotion, to be totally present in the experience. I want it to radiate with energy; I want it to ask, “What’s next?”
